Folding Openers
Folding openers have been one of our core product ranges for over 30 years and Building Profiles is now recognised as the UK’s leading distributor of folding openers.
Our folding openers range is very wide and varied but we can say with confidence that we give the best advice on the most suitable fitting for the job because we understand the needs of fabricators. We also have the experience and knowledge to assist fabricators in positively identifying the appropriate ‘step size’ and fixing centres most compatible with the window profile and manufacturing material.
What are folding openers?
Folding openers provide a simple and cost effective way of remotely opening casements without compromising security. These are particularly suitable for schools, hospitals, offices, care homes and sheltered housing.
They can be used singularly or can be linked in pairs or a triple to accommodate different window widths. They can also be used at low level operated by hand or at high level operated by using a tandem eye and pole operator.
Our folding openers range
Our range is manufactured from extruded aluminium and is normally supplied from stock in a silver anodised finish – however, powder coated finishes can be supplied subject to a small lead time.
Below is just a sample of what is available – our two standard folding openers can be supplied in a variety of vertical and horizontal fixing centres:

STANDARD FOLDING OPENERS
111 FOLDING OPENER
The 111 type folding opener has been designed for high level operation for use with windows that are beyond reach under normal circumstances and can be used for flush faced and stepped applications.
High level operation is achieved by using an operating pole connected to the operating ring or additional tandem eye (see below) allowing simple opening and closing from one point.
The 111 folding opener is available in lockable and releasable versions and provides a window aperture opening of up to 150mm.
For larger windows two or three openers can be linked simply using our range of tandem bars to provide opening and closing from a single point using a pole hook.
Tandem bars are located through the operating ring in the bottom arm. The design means that if a tandem eye (see below) is required this should always point back into the room so this can be reached easily with an operating pole.
This range is not suitable for hand operation.

112 FOLDING OPENER
The 112 type folding opener has the operating eye for the tandem bar located on the top arm and can be used for both hand operation at low level or high level with tandem bars and the 262 tandem eye (see below).
The 112 folding opener is available in lockable and releasable versions and provides a window aperture opening of up to 150mm.
For larger windows two or three openers can be linked simply using our range of tandem bars to provide opening and closing from a single point.
Tandem bars are located through the operating ring in the top arm. The design means that if a tandem eye (see below) is required this should always point back into the room so this can be reached easily with an operating pole.

RELEASABLE FOLDING OPENER
The ‘Releasable’ opener is used on fully reversible and semi reversible pivoting casements.
The release is obtained using an Allen key operated side mechanism.
It is handy for outside cleaning and general maintenance.
The releasable feature can be added to any of the complete folding opener range (except Fold-a-side).

LOCKABLE FOLDING OPENER
The ‘Lockable’ opener is used to attain a degree of security on either side of the installation.
The locking is achieved by a captive socket screw fitted into the top arm which is operated with an Allen key. In addition to our standard range, this feature can be applied to the complete folding opener range (except Fold-a-side opener).

UNIVERSAL FOLDING OPENER
This is a hybrid incorporating the benefits of a 111 and 112 folding opener.
The ‘Universal’ opener incorporates operating rings on both top and bottom arms.
This assembly has been introduced to give greater flexibility to the fabricator by giving the option of hand or pole operation. Hand, because there is a top ring to lift and pole because the lower ring remains inside the building during normal high level operation.
This folding opener is particularly useful for bottom hung opening windows. The use of two operating eyes enables ease of opening/closing.

EXTENDED FOLDING OPENER
This ‘Extended’ opener is designed to achieve extra ventilation. It provides a 315mm opening.
It can be linked or used singularly.
This opener is not suitable for high-level pole operation.
Safety considerations require that a tandem bar be used to connect multiple folding openers, or if used singularly with our PE164 hand grip.

FOLD-A-SIDE FOLDING OPENER
The ‘Fold-a-side’ opener folds sideways. This is particularly useful in corridors, stairways and areas where space is limited.
They are particularly appropriate when folding openers are required at eye level, where blinds are fitted and within secondary glazing.
Only available in powder coated versions.

Accessories

EASIGRIP HANDLE
The ‘Easigrip’ handle has been designed to be used with all of our 112 type folding openers. Locating directly into the operating ring (as illustrated) the ‘Easigrip’ provides a positive grip to assist anyone who may have difficulty in operating the standard version.
Recommended for the elderly, disabled or people with special needs.

LINK TUBES / TANDEM BARS
All folding openers (except Fold-a-side) can be connected in pairs or triples to provide a simple easy to use handle operation.
Tandem bars should be used on all window casements greater than 800mm wide.
They range in length from 600mm to 4000mm.

OPERATING POLES
The ‘Operating Pole’ is used for operating high level installations.
Standard stock lengths are 1400mm and 2000mm. Larger or smaller poles are available to special order. Pole lengths longer than 2m can be unwieldy and are not generally recommended.
The operating poles are supplied with either a large or small boss depending on the style of tandem eye (see below) being used.

LINK TUBE RINGS / TANDEM EYES
If you have multiple folding openers linked by a tandem bar and pole operation is necessary then a tandem eye is required. The tandem eye should be fitted either centrally or immediately to the side of the central folding opener if using three folding openers.
Three types of tandem eyes are available:
262 TANDEM EYE (top image)
The ‘262 Tandem Eye’ – our most popular - can be operated with either the small or large boss operating pole. It is best suited where an extended operating arc is required.
263 TANDEM EYE (middle image)
The ‘263 Tandem Eye’ should only be operated using the small boss operating pole. It is generally used to give an extended operating arc.
260 TANDEM EYE (bottom image)
An early design, the ‘260 Tandem Eye’ should be operated with a small boss operating pole.

PE196 EXTRUDED ADAPTOR
The ‘PE196 Extruded Adaptor’ is specifically designed to be used with a 111 type folding opener. The adapter enables pole operation (263 type only) on a single folding opener. This adapter is not suitable for applications where sill board is fitted.

PACKING PIECES
‘Packing Pieces’ are used to increase the standard step range. Fitted behind the casement bracket of the folding opener and are available in 2mm, 3mm and 5mm options.

SPRING CATCHES
The 211 aluminium ‘Spring Catch’ and keep is available with 4 sized keeps covering flush, 5mm, 7mm and 16mm step sizes. These spring catches can be linked using our standard range of tandem bars and can also be operated at high level using our cranked operating poles.
Packers are available where needed.
We recommend the fitting of roller arm stays with spring catches on all bottom hung open in installations – contact our sales team for expert advice.

END CAPS
‘End Caps’ not only finish off the tandem bars professionally but also ensure the correct fitting of folding openers to the tandem bars.

|
CENTRAL SPACER
When the tandem bar exceeds 1000mm we would recommend the fitting of a third folding opener. This spacer fits in between the tandem bar and the middle opener to ensure the correct fitting.
